What’s the difference between Landmarks and Geofences?

Landmarks and Geofences both represent pre-defined areas on the map; however, they are different in valuable ways:

Landmarks (Account > Landmark List)

  • Circular shape
  • Defined by a radius centered at a point or address
  • Commonly used for:
    • Customer locations
    • Tracking when a vehicle has stopped or idle at a particular location (Landmark Stops Report)
    • Off-hours Activity (leaving landmarks outside of sanctioned hours)
  • Landmark Stops Report:
    • Arrival, Duration, and Departure Times for those vehicles who stop/idle inside the landmark
    • This report shows stop based on the Landmark Name, not Address

Geofences: (Account > Geofence List)

  • Can be any polygonal shape
  • Can be very complex shapes or areas to suit your needs
  • Drawn at a particular location, but not centered to any one address point like a Landmark
  • Can be created semi-automatically by selecting points on a roadway
  • Off-hours activity (leaving geofences outside of sanctioned hours)
  • Commonly used for:
    • Areas vehicles must remain inside
    • Areas that are off-limits
    • Entry / Exit tracking
    • Delivery areas
    • Town / Municipality boundaries
  • Geofence Report available to track:
    • Enter / Exit count, Distance
    • Distance driven within the Geofence
    • Duration within the Geofence
    • Max and Average speeds within the Geofence
    • Please note: Geofence Reports only returns information from the time your geofences are created. Creating a geofence today will not allow you to run a report from yesterday.
