How to use Safety Score Report 🆕

How to run the Safety Score report in PosiTrace, read the trend chart and results table, and understand how the score is calculated from driving behaviour events.

The Safety Score report turns your fleet’s driving behaviour into a single score out of 100 for every vehicle, so you can see at a glance who is driving safely, who needs coaching, and whether that coaching is working. This article covers how to run the report, what each part of the results means, and how the score is calculated.

Before you start: safety scores are built from driver behaviour events — harsh acceleration, harsh braking, harsh turns and others — so a vehicle only gets a meaningful score if its device reports those events and the vehicle actually drove during the period you select.

Where to find the report

From the top navigation bar, open Reports and choose Safety Score under the Driver & Safety column.

Setting up the report

The report opens as a panel on the left of the screen. Choose what to include, then click Generate Report.

Field What it does
Accounts Limits the report to one or more accounts. Leave it on All to cover every account you have access to.
Equipment Groups Limits the report to specific groups — a division, a region, or a vehicle type. The fastest way to compare like with like.
Equipment Picks individual vehicles or assets. Use the funnel icon beside the field to narrow the list before you choose.
Group by Controls what one row of the results represents. The default is Account, Equipment, Day — one score per vehicle per day, which is what feeds the trend chart. Remove Day to get a single score per vehicle for the whole period instead.
Date Range The period the report covers. A month or more gives a trend you can act on; a single day is best for investigating one incident.
Hours range Narrows the report to a window of the day — useful for scoring a night shift, or for excluding out-of-hours use.
Days range Narrows the report to specific days, for example weekdays only.
Measurement Units Switches the report between Imperial and Metric.
Additional Fields Adds optional columns to the results table. Open the dropdown to see what is available for your account.
Results Format Leave it on web to read the report on screen. The other options produce a file you can download and share.

Tip: set your filters before you click Schedule. A scheduled report keeps the selections that were on screen when you created it, so the version that lands in your inbox is exactly the one you set up.

Reading the results

Safety Score Trend

One line per vehicle across the dates you selected. Read it for direction rather than exact numbers: a line drifting downwards is a habit forming, and a line that lifts after a coaching conversation is your evidence that the conversation worked. Use the legend to hide or show individual vehicles.

Safety Score and Engine hours

The two tiles on the right summarize everything the report covers — the average safety score, and the total engine hours behind it. Read them together: a score built on a handful of engine hours is far less reliable than the same score built on hundreds.

Top 5 Safe Driving and Top 5 Risky Driving

Your best and worst performers for the period. The risky list is your coaching shortlist. The safe list is worth recognizing publicly — a safety program that only ever delivers bad news stops being read.

Event(s)

The total count of each behaviour event in the period — Acceleration, Deceleration and Harsh Turn in the example above. This is where you find the single habit costing your fleet the most points, which makes for a far better toolbox talk than “drive more safely”.

The results table

One row per account, vehicle and day, depending on your Group by setting. Alongside the Safety Score you get the Engine hours and the individual event counts that produced it, so you can always see why a score came out the way it did. Sort by Safety Score to bring the worst days to the top.

How the Safety Score is calculated

The score starts at 100 and events take points off it. Two things shape the result:

  • Severity. Events are weighted, so a crash costs far more than a harsh turn.
  • Driving time. The total penalty is measured against how long the vehicle was driving. Without this, a vehicle that drives eight hours a day would always score worse than one that drives for one — simply because it has more opportunities to trigger an event.

Safety Score = ( 1 − ( weighted event points × 60 ) ÷ driving time in seconds ) × 100

In plainer terms: the score is 100 minus the weighted event points collected per minute of driving, times 100. Higher is safer, and the score never goes negative — it stops at 0.

Event weights

Events are weighted from most to least severe, broadly as follows (adjustable):

Weights can be tailored to your fleet. Weights are configurable per account, so your scores may be calculated with a different set. If safety scoring is central to how you manage drivers, you can adjust them so the score reflects the risks that matter most in your operation.

A worked example

A van drives for two hours — 120 minutes — and records four harsh accelerations and two harsh turns.

  • 4 harsh accelerations × weight 2 = 8 points
  • 2 harsh turns × weight 1 = 2 points
  • 10 points ÷ 120 minutes = 0.083 points per minute
  • Safety Score = ( 1 − 0.083 ) × 100 = 91.7

The same ten points collected over a 20-minute drive would produce a score of 50 — which is exactly the point of the calculation. Ten rough moments in a short trip is a very different driving pattern from ten spread across a full shift.

If you have AI dash cameras

Where your equipment supports them, AI camera events — driver fatigue, distraction, phone use, lane departure, forward collision and similar — can also be included in the score. That gives you a score based on what the driver was doing, not only on how the vehicle was moving. Speak to your Account Manager about adding them.

Making the report useful

  • Compare like with like. Filter by Equipment Groups so long-haul trucks are not ranked against city vans on the same list.
  • Review on a rhythm. A scheduled weekly report to supervisors beats a report someone has to remember to run.
  • Coach on the event, not the score. Take the top event type from the Event(s) chart into the conversation. “Your harsh braking is the highest in the group” is actionable in a way that “your score is 74” is not.
  • Check back on the trend. Two to four weeks after a coaching session, look at that vehicle’s line in the trend chart.
  • Catch problems as they happen. This report is a look backwards. To be told about harsh driving on the day it happens, set up a notification rule for the relevant events.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a vehicle show a Safety Score of 0.00?

The score cannot go below zero, so 0.00 means the weighted event points were very high relative to the driving time recorded. The usual causes are a lot of events over a short period of driving, or a unit that logged events but almost no driving time in the range you selected. Check the Engine hours and event counts on the same row of the results table — they will tell you which it is.

Why does an idle vehicle score 100?

No events means no points taken off. A vehicle that did not move and triggered nothing scores a perfect 100 — accurate, but not informative. Another reason to read scores next to Engine hours.

A vehicle is missing from the report. Why?

Either it falls outside the filters — check Accounts, Equipment Groups and Equipment — or it produced no data at all in the selected date range, hours and days.

Can I see scores per driver rather than per vehicle?

The Safety Score report is equipment based. For driver-level reporting, use the other reports in the Driver & Safety column, such as Driver Summary and Driver Events. Those rely on drivers being identified in PosiTrace, through driver assignment or a driver ID reader.

Can this report be emailed automatically?

Yes. Set your filters, then click Schedule instead of Generate Report. Existing schedules are managed from the Scheduling button at the top of the Reports menu.

Two vehicles have the same number of events but different scores. How?

Because driving time and event severity both count. The vehicle with more driving time spreads the same points over a longer period and scores higher, and events of different types carry different weights.
